Beginning Wednesday, European mobile phone users can cross national borders in Europe and know they won’t be slammed with a huge cell phone bill when they return home. Roaming charges for cell phone and texting messages are dropping.

A new single tariff, in the works since 2007, covers all European Union countries and the charges for many consumers for some messages will plunge. Roamed text charges will drop from 28 European cents to 11 cents and roamed mobile calls will also drop, but not as much as text messages. Calls will drop from 46 cents to 43 cents. Sending a megabyte of data will cost 85 cents — about one-half the previous data price.

File hosting service Rapidshare has been fined €24m by a German court and ordered to filter online content more effectively. German royalties collector GEMA, which brought the case against the company, had called on the Regional Court in Hamburg to order Rapidshare to prohibit around 5,000 music tracks from being made available online.

The Iphone Dev Team just released this very first version from their new PwnageTool, supporting the recently released 3.0 OS for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Since TPB is quite having a lot of seeders, I managed to give you this hotfile mirror. Please read their blog before trying anything!

A US jury has ordered a 32-year-old woman to pay $US1.92 million ($A2.4 million) in damages for illegally downloading 24 songs in a high-profile digital piracy case.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a single mother of four from the US state of Minnesota, was found liable for using the Kazaa peer-to-peer file-sharing network to download the songs over the internet.

On Wednesday, Asus and Disney launched the co-branded Netpal netbook, also known as the Asus MK90 and MK90H, designed for kids aged 6-12. The Netpal will be available in late July, and will retail for $349.99.

The systems come in Princess Pink and Magic Blue and offer customizable themes that kids can set to their favorite Disney films and characters, including Club Penguin, WALL-E, Hannah Montana, and the Jonas Bros.

Kingston announced a brand new flash drive series yesterday called the DataTraveler 200, which sports a 128GB capacity for the very first time. Other models are 32GB and 64GB, rounding out the line up nicely.

Microsoft is poised to start giving away security software. The company is reportedly trialling free anti-virus software internally and said the beta version would be released “soon�. Called Morro, the software will tackle viruses but lack the broader range of utilities, such as parental locks, found in paid-for security suites.

Morro will be Microsoft’s second venture in the highly competitive security market. Microsoft’s first attempt revolved around the Windows Live OneCare service that did not succeed in turning many customers away from rivals such as Symantec and McAfee. Microsoft plans to discontinue Live OneCare once the Morro software is ready. No specific date has been given for when Morro will be released, but in the past Microsoft has said it would be out by the end of 2009 at the latest.

nternet piracy is costing the U.K. alone almost $300 million a year, according to technology analysis group Jupiter Research. Little wonder that European capitals are racing to win more powers to take on the worst pirates. So far, though, they don’t seem to be getting too far.

In France earlier this week the Constitutional Council, effectively France’s Supreme Court, ruled that proposed laws that would have forced Internet service providers (ISPs) to identify and help prosecute users who illegally trade copyrighted material, were unconstitutional. The news comes as a blow for the government of President Nicolas Sarkozy as well as organizations around Europe that had been hoping that the French example might spur other governments into greater action against illegal file sharing.

European buyers of Windows 7 will have to download and install a web browser for themselves. Bowing to European competition rules, Microsoft Windows 7 will ship without Internet Explorer. The company said it would make it easy for PC makers and users to get at and install the web browsing program.

In response the Europaan Commission expressed scepticism over the move and if it would allay accusations of Microsoft abusing its market position. “We’re committed to making Windows 7 available in Europe at the same time that it launches in the rest of the world,� Dave Heiner, Microsoft deputy general counsel, said in a statement, “but we also must comply with European competition law as we launch the product.�

Every PC in China could be at risk of being taken over by malicious hackers because of flaws in compulsory government software. The potential faults were brought to light by Chinese computer experts who said the flaw could lead to a “large-scale disaster�.

The Chinese government has mandated that all computers in the country must have the screening software installed. It is intended to filter out offensive material from the net. The Chinese government said that the Green Dam Youth Escort software, as it is known, was intended to push forward the “healthy development of the internet� and “effectively manage harmful material for the public and prevent it from being spread.�

I am not a big fan of Bluetooth headsets. I think they have their place, like when you are trying to drive in a manual transmission car. However, if you use one while say walking in the mall you should be kicked in the balls (or punched in the ovaries if more appropriate).

If you are into music on your phone, most go for ear buds because they are compact and don’t look as strange on your head as say your massive headphones from 1984. Nokia has announced a new Bluetooth headset called the BH-905 that is quite large. The massive size looks like something you would see with a home stereo rather than a mobile phone or MP3 player.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has ordered that all personal computers, whether made in China or imported from abroad, must include specific software to filter inappropriate information. Rebecca MacKinnon, assistant professor at the Journalism & Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong, has posted a copy of the Chinese government order on her Web site.

According to her translation, Web filtering software called Green Dam Youth Escort must be installed on all PCs sold in China as of July 1. The software also must be included on a hard-drive partition or on a CD included with the computer to allow for reinstallation.

It may look odd, but this ergonomic keyboard promises to free up your desk from the tyranny of your mouse.  Well, from the tyranny of a separate mouse, anyway; the handiwork of an Australian inventor, the Combimouse turns the right-side of the keyboard into the mouse itself, using cleverly placed contacts to figure out when you’re trying to use it to to control your cursor.

In mouse mode, the I, O, J, K, L and < buttons all become mouse buttons, while there’s a scroll-wheel on the bottom right-hand corner of the left keyboard half.  There are also multimedia keys and a numeric keypad accessed with a num-lock button.

NEC’s huge CRV43 LCD display - which offers a gently curving 43-inch  2,880 x 900 resolution panel - has finally got a release date and price, though don’t expect much change from $8k.  Intended for graphic designers and command/control users, the CRV43 runs at double-WGXA resolution and connects with a single DVI-D or HDMI 1.3 connector.

Contrast is 10,000:1, while the CRV43 puts out 200 cd/m2 brightness and has a 0.02ms response time.  Those wanting this for design work rather than just desk boasting rights will be pleased to hear that it offers 100-percent coverage of sRGB and 99.3-percent coverage of Adobe RGB.
